Silicon Carbide Heating Element Overview

SiC electric heating elements (silicon carbon rods) are made of high-purity green SiC as raw material and are made by high-temperature recrystallization at 2200°C.Its resistance decreases with increasing temperature and changes with the use time, but when used for a long time, a layer of SiO₂ protective film will form on the surface, which helps to stabilize the resistance and extend the service life. SiC electric heating elements have excellent high temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance.They are suitable for industrial applications such as high-temperature heating and precision temperature control, and have high thermal efficiency and uniform heating.

Silicon carbide heating elements offer advantages such as corrosion resistance to acids and alkalis, strong oxidation resistance, high surface load density for fast heating, good thermal shock resistance, low coefficient of thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, high operating temperature, and long lifespan.

FAQ

1) What furnace temperature can SiC elements reach?

Straight one-piece elements are typically used up to ~1600 °C; spiral types up to ~1650 °C. Atmosphere and watt loading affect limits; see derating guidance.

SiC resistance varies significantly from ambient to ~800 °C and stabilizes above ~900 °C. Measure at ≥1000 °C for a meaningful working value.

Air and inert gases allow higher limits. Dry hydrogen and strong reducing atmospheres can remove the protective SiO₂ layer; use lower temperatures or protective measures.

Straight for simplicity; U/W for compact multi-leg layouts and phase balance; dumbbell to reduce terminal losses; spiral groove for higher resistance and fine watt-density control; RA for constrained terminal routing.

Hot-zone diameters ~8–54 mm; overall lengths ~300–1800 mm; hot zones up to ~1500 mm, depending on type and supplier.

Use SCR/thyristor control; design for resistance increase with aging. Keep phase loads balanced; match elements in series within tight resistance tolerance.

They can run in certain H₂ mixtures but at reduced temperatures. Pure dry hydrogen generally requires much lower element temperature to maintain life.

Common element designs cover ~110–480 V per circuit. Final voltage depends on element resistance (hot), wiring (series/parallel), and transformer/SCR selection.
