Select Silicon Carbide by Application

Many projects start from operating conditions rather than part drawings. Use the guide below to match your application to the most suitable SiC products and material grades.

SiC Material Grades at a Glance

Most industrial projects use one of three main silicon carbide grades. Choosing the right grade is as important as choosing SiC itself. The table below summarises typical characteristics.

ParameterSSiC Sintered SiCRBSiC / SiSiC Reaction-bonded SiCRSiC Recrystallized SiC
Typical purity & porosityVery high purity, very low porosity; suitable for aggressive media and clean processes.Contains some free silicon; low porosity and good dimensional stability in complex shapes.High purity, open microstructure for lightweight, thick-section components.
Max. service temperature (air)Up to ~1600 °C depending on design and atmosphere.Typically ~1300–1400 °C in air; grade- and load-dependent.Comparable to high-end SSiC grades in many furnace duties.
Corrosion resistanceExcellent in many acids, alkalis and gases; preferred for harsh chemistries.Very good for most industrial media; avoid extreme pH where free silicon may react.Very good in high-temperature oxidising atmospheres.
Thermal shock resistanceHigh; retains strength at elevated temperature with good thermal conductivity.Very good; often chosen for components facing rapid temperature swings.Excellent for long, lightweight furnace components.
Mechanical strength & wearVery high hardness and flexural strength, including at temperature.High strength with good wear and impact resistance for heavy industrial duty.High strength relative to weight; ideal for large structural parts.
Typical applicationsMechanical seals, high-purity tubes, critical wear parts, semiconductor components.Nozzles, kiln furniture, general-purpose furnace parts, pump components.Large tubes, beams and plates in high-temperature furnaces.
Cost level (relative)HigherMediumMedium–higher (grade-dependent)

Why Work with Zirsec for Silicon Carbide

We combine material science, precision processing and application engineering to deliver SiC components that survive real-world duty, not just look good on a datasheet.

Fast small-batch customization

1-piece MOQ for many items, samples in 3–7 days and agile small-batch production help you move from idea to validated hardware quickly.

Precision manufacturing & QC

Vacuum sintering, CNC machining and strict inspection for density, strength, dimensions and surface finish, including optical-flat checks for seal faces.

Application engineering support

Our engineers work with your team on material selection, geometry optimisation and failure-analysis feedback to raise MTBF and reduce life-cycle cost.

Global supply & documentation

Experience with international shipments, technical documentation and long-term supply for OEM programs and retrofit projects.

How We Work with Your SiC Project

Whether you are prototyping a new component or upgrading an existing design, the workflow is structured to minimise risk and compress lead times.

1. Define requirements

Share drawings or sketches, media, temperature, pressure, mechanical loads and target lifetime. If you are replacing metals or other ceramics, we can start from existing parts.

2. Material & design review

Our engineers recommend material grades and design tweaks to balance performance, risk and cost, drawing on past field experience.

3. Quotation & sampling

You receive a detailed quotation with lead times. Sample pieces are produced for fit, function and field trials before scaling up.

4. Small-batch and ramp-up

Flexible lines support small-batch validation and smooth transition to larger volumes once the design is frozen.

5. Long-term supply & optimisation

We monitor feedback from the field and can refine designs to further extend service life or simplify installation over time.

FAQ

At minimum: drawings or sketches, dimensions, tolerances, material preference (if any), operating temperature and atmosphere, media (gas/liquid/solid and chemistry), pressure, mechanical loads, target lifetime and expected quantity profile (prototypes vs series).

SSiC is usually selected for the most aggressive chemistries, high purity or critical wear locations. RBSiC is ideal for robust, cost-effective industrial duty and complex shapes. RSiC works well for large, lightweight furnace components. We can recommend a grade once we know your service conditions.

Many projects start with a 1-piece MOQ. Standard items can often be supplied from existing tooling. Typical guidance: samples in about 3–7 days and small batches in roughly a week, with larger orders scheduled according to size and complexity.

Yes. We frequently convert metal or alumina parts to SiC to improve service life, reduce corrosion issues and raise MTBF. We can start from your current drawings or physical samples, then optimise geometry for silicon carbide where appropriate.

We work with OEMs and plant operators on long-term supply, including qualification runs, stocking strategies and design refreshes as performance data accumulates in the field.
